Apple has reportedly released an update to its iOS mobile phone operating system, which is version 5.1.1.

It claims to remove some of the current operating system’s bugs and improves the reliability of some of the options.

Released yesterday (May 7th), the update is for the iPhone 3GS and later versions of the mobile phone, as well as the iPads.

Two of the main items of concern for Apple users – wireless connectivity and battery life – have not been improved upon, The Register reports.

The new iPad has received criticism from some quarters about its battery life with a recent report from research firm DisplayMate suggesting that it is not necessarily 100 per cent charged even when it shows such a reading.

One of the key improvements made, Apple noted, was an increased reliability when using the HDR option for photos taken when using the Lock Screen shortcut.

Despite the fact that Samsung was recently revealed as the world’s largest mobile phone operator, the Korean firm is still trailing behind Apple in the UK.

According to ComScore, Samsung still has some way to go in the UK smartphone market as figures put them behind Apple’s iPhone.

New data released by the company said that despite a 29 per cent share of smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2012 in the world, the iPhone had a better three months in the UK.

Apple’s flagship device ended March with 26 per cent of all current smartphone users in the country.

A total of 27.2 million people in the UK have a smartphone, which represents 55 per cent of the total mobile audience, up from 39 per cent in March 2011.

Samsung is the fourth largest smartphone provider with 4.4 million handsets in use, which represents 16.2 per cent. This figure has risen markedly from 1.3 million at the end of March last year.

Samsung has finally launched its eagerly anticipated flagship smartphone – the Galaxy S3 – at an event in London last night (May 3rd).

The new handset has a 4.8-inch screen, which is 0.5-inch increase on its predecessor.

Analysts have suggested that the handset is critical to how people view the Samsung brand and also how the Android operating system runs.

The popularity of its predecessor – the Galaxy S2 – has been noted as a major factor behind the Korean firm overtaking Nokia to become the best-selling mobile phone maker in the world.

It is significantly bigger than the 3.5-inch display of Apple’s iPhone 4S and also the 4.3-inch Nokia Lumia 900.

Principal analyst at Ovum Adam Leach said the new device will help Android remain the most used smartphone operating system.

“The company has built its reputation on producing the ‘must-have’ Android smartphone and in the process has become the poster child for the Android platform,” he continued.

Mobile phone recycling: Apple leads the way in tablet sales in Q1

A steep drop in shipments of Android-based tablets has offset a strong quarter from Apple and caused the media tablet marketing industry to miss expected projections for the first three months of 2012.

According to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker, total worldwide media tablet shipments for the quarter reached 17.4 million units.

This figure is 1.2 million below projections for the three-month period and is a 38.4 per cent decline on numbers seen in the previous record-breaking quarter.

Earlier this week it was claimed that iPads and tablets are not yet ready to overtake laptops in terms of popularity, which could be a contributing factor in these figures.

“Apple reasserted its dominance in the market this quarter, driving huge shipment totals at a time when all but a few Android vendors saw their numbers drop precipitously,” research director of mobile connected devices at IDC Tom Mainelli said.

Change happens together

At RPC Recycle, we work with a number of charities to help raise funds for them by recycling unwanted mobile phones and we are incredibly proud of the relationships we have built with with NORCAS over years.

NORCAS is a leading independent charity working with people, of all ages, who have problems with alcohol, drugs or gambling. They provide advice and information and have professional help available if it is needed.

Here’s what Donna Hunt Training Fundraising assistant at NORCAS had to say about working with us;

“At NORCAS we believe that reducing the problems caused by addictive behaviour can unlock a person’s potential, allowing them to take control of their life and their destiny. If you, or someone you know, has a problem with alcohol, drugs or gambling we’re here to listen. We’re here to help.

NORCAS receives a certain amount of statutory funding, but with the current economic climate it is ever more important for us to raise funds for ourselves.

For just over 2 years, we have worked in partnership with what was National Express East Anglia, now Greater Anglia. Julie Henderson, the Lost Property Supervisor based at Norwich Station, has been collecting mobile phones to help raise funds for NORCAS.

She places a call to us, and we contact RPC Recycle to arrange pick up, and in turn we receive notification of value followed by a cheque.

We then issue Julie with a Certificate of Appreciation to display in the lost property office. Over the last year, Julie has recycled phones to the value of roughly £3000, and continues with an on-going collection”

Sell my mobile: Smartphone owners shun books and exercise for internet

New research has shown that smartphone owners are spending an increasing amount of time on the internet but are reading books and exercising less.

The study conducted by mobile phone website Recombu.com found that people are spending an average of five hours a week surfing the web on their devices.

It also showed that people with smartphones are using a lot of their spare time to interact on social media sites, sending emails and shopping online.

The State of the news media report conducted by Pew research centre’s project for excellence in journalism last month found that more people with smart devices are keeping abreast of the news.

Editor of Recombu.com Hannah Bouckley told the Daily Telegraph that boredom is becoming a thing of the past for people with internet access on their mobile phones.

“Mobile internet access is a key part of everyday life for many of us, so much so that it is hard to imagine a time without it,” she continued.

Samsung is set to launch the latest version of its flagship smartphone range Galaxy at a London event later on Thursday (May 3rd).

More than 20 million of the existing Galaxy SII have been sold since its launch in April 2011 and analysts say the success of the handset helped Samsung overtake Nokia as world’s best mobile phone maker.

Changes in the new handset are set to include screen size, form factor and a higher-resolution camera.

The phone will be the first to feature its new Exynos 4 quad-core chip, which the firms states will double the processing capability of the device while using 20 per cent less energy.

Research vice president at tech analysis firm Gartner Carolina Milanesi said the experience that the consumer chip will offer is important.

“So less battery use, better touch response and the ability to better handle multitasking to let more operations be carried out simultaneously will all be noted,” she continued.

Orange and T-Mobile revenues hit by cuts to mobile fees

03/05/2012

Everything Everywhere, which operates the Orange and T-Mobile brands, has reported a drop in revenues due to fee cuts imposed by regulators.

The group announced a 2.5 per cent year on year fall in service revenues to £1.5 billion for the first three months of 2012.

This drop reflected the impact of cuts in the fees mobile operators are now allowed to charge one another. This amounted to around an £80 million loss.

Excluding the impact of the fee cuts, Everything Everywhere’s underlying service revenues rose by 2.9 per cent.

Mobile phone operators are forced to levy charges called Mobile Termination rates when non-customers use their networks. In March last year, Ofcom stated it wanted these reduced to 1p or less a minute by 2014.

The group is currently trying to convince contract customers to migrate to data-hungry smartphones, which end up bringing in far more money.

LG ‘sticking by Windows Phone 7′

02/05/2012

LG has denied rumours that it is ditching the Windows Phone 7 operating system (OS) in favour of Android.

Reports had been circulating that LG would be getting rid of the OS for good after a spokesperson for the firm was quoted as saying in the Korea Herald the company would be taking a step back from it.

The spokesman suggested that the total unit sales of Windows Phone-operated mobile phones had not been as strong as expected.

However, a representative for the company in Korea told Pocket-lint that none of the speculation is true and criticised the publication that started spreading the reports.

In the UK the only Windows Phone 7 device currently on offer to consumers is the LG Optimus 7, while in the US the only offering is the LG Quantum.

“We are still on board with Windows Phone, but right now, we’re focusing on Android because that’s where the demand is,” the spokesman added.

iPads and tablets not yet ready to overtake laptops

Despite the growing popularity of tablets such as iPads and Amazon’s Kindle Fire, research has shown that the devices are not quite ready to overtake laptops.

One in three respondents in an ongoing tracking study being carried out by ABI Research claimed they plan to purchase a laptop computer in the first half of 2012.

This compares to 16 per cent who claimed they would be in the market for a new media tablet of some form.

The research found that while desktop PC and laptop ownership fell in the latest figures, they still hold a clear lead over tablets.

It was recently suggested that many people in the medical profession are now using their mobile phones and tablets instead of laptops or PCs to check patient records among other things on the move.

Consumer research group director Jeff Orr said that the numbers suggest that while popularity of tablets is increasing there is still considerable interest in laptops.
