London mayor Boris Johnson has recently commented that recycling and reusing are two “common sense” practices that should be adopted by more people.

Speaking as some £12 million in funding is set to be approved by the London Waste and Recycling Board for a new green energy facility, the mayor noted that people need to take “practical action” to cut down on their waste.

A further £5 million is expected to be invested in the Recycle for London initiative over the next three years to cut down on the waste sent to landfill by the capital ahead of the 2012 Olympics.

“We must also encourage Londoners to recycle as much as possible or reuse items that could just get chucked away,” he said.

The Recycle for London campaign estimates that up to 15 million old or unused mobiles are currently lying around in British homes and workplaces.

It notes that as these gadgets contain toxic components, it is important to ensure they are disposed of safely through recycling.

That is because the company unveiled the winners of its Alliance Program’s EMEA Innovation Awards 2009, which looks at applications and services that can be run using the BlackBerry platform.

In the Life category, Multiplied Media’s Poynt offering was selected for its local search facilities, while the Entertainment gong went to 7digital and DevelopIQ’s music app for DRM-free mp3s.

The Connect section saw Nimbuzz’s instant messaging and social networking facility come up trumps and a selection of other, more business-focused accolades went to Innova Telecom, NTS, Elondra and e-office.

Vice-president of global alliances at RIM Tyler Lessard said: “The winners of this year’s awards demonstrated particular innovation in their respective categories.”

A new study has highlighted the popularity of full touchscreen devices, which may inspire those currently recycling mobile phones.

Samsung Electronics has revealed that in the 12-month period ending in November 2009, it estimates that it has been able to sell 40 million devices equipped with such technology.

This is in comparison to a year before, when the number was closer to ten million and, according to the manufacturer, is reflective of the continuing popularity of the models in its range.

JK Shin, executive vice-president and head of Samsung Electronics’ mobile communications division, said the figures also show that there has been “remarkable growth” in the sector.

“Consumers increasingly enjoy the user experience and convenience that these devices put at their finger tips,” he added.

Models in the firm’s range that come with a full touchscreen interface include the new Genio Touch.

Shoppers looking to sell mobile phones may find themselves targeted by a new marketing campaign from HTC.

The company, which is responsible for devices like the Touch, Magic and Hero, has announced details of a new strategy that aims to address the fact people want a more personalised gadget experience.

It is hoped the Quietly Brilliant television and print initiative will raise the company’s profile as a provider of smartphone solutions that deliver a tailor-made option for buyers.

John Wang, chief marketing officer of the corporation, said: “Quietly Brilliant is doing great things in a humble way, with the belief that the best things in life can only be experienced, not explained.”

The HTC Hero was recently launched on 3 Mobile, with the carrier announcing it would be available as part of a package that comes with premium access to the Spotify music streaming service.

Research In Motion (RIM) announced this week that the follow up to the 9000 version of the device would be available soon and took the opportunity to detail some of the features buyers could expect.

Following on from the announcement that the firm would launch a sequel to the BlackBerry Storm, it was advised that the Bold 9700 would come equipped with 3G HSDPA support and a 624 MHz internal processor.

In addition, the firm has included 256 MB of internal Flash memory with the device which is expandable via a microSD card, while a 3.2-megapixel camera, GPS and Wi-Fi are also built-in.

Mike Lazaridis, RIM’s president and co-chief executive officer, said the device offer “new, state-of-the-art features and a smaller, lighter and highly optimised design”.

Vodafone has since announced that it will support the smartphone when it hits stores.

A new green gadget has been unveiled that may interest those recycling mobile phones for environmental reasons.

G24 Innovations has revealed that it will utilise an existing product from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne of Switzerland that combines a portable solar charger with a bag.

Put together using panels built in Cardiff, Wales and holdalls created by Hong Kong-listed manufacturer Mascotte Holdings, the end result is one the company hopes will be particularly successful with professionals.

G24 chief executive John Hartnett told the South China Morning Post that expanding the range will also mean that it can appeal to even more different types of customer.

“In the future, our product will become smaller and it will change from being around the electronic device to on it and eventually inside it, displacing plastics, springs and coils associated with batteries,” he explained.

The product follows LG’s revelation that the upcoming GD510 Pop will come with a solar panel that boasts up to two minutes and 15 seconds of talk time after a ten-minute session in daylight.

Musicmagpie.co.uk announced in June 2009 that they had paid out £1 million to users and at that time estimated that they would reach £2 million by Christmas. With the launch of the TV advertising campaign the site has continued to grow in popularity and reached this next milestone in just three months, half the original forecast.

Managing Director Steve Oliver commented: “Musicmagpie’s customer base is growing daily as more and more people look to earn extra money from things they no longer use. In the last couple of months we have seen our TV ad contribute a significant increase in the number of people visiting the website. We are really pleased about the growth of the business and see it continuing to gain popularity.”

Every year, Britain produces 70 million tonnes of industrial and commercial waste, so the Co-operative Group’s mantra on waste management to reduce, reuse and recycle is essential. The Co-operative Group is a signatory of the Courtauld Commitment and has taken internal steps and improved it’s packaging in order to reduce waste. It has increased the rate of reuse and recycling, improved biodegradable processes and funded more sustainable waste management options.

By 2010, the Co-operative Group aims to reduce the use of packaging by 15 per cent for its branded products. The Group is the first retailer to run a successful campaign on minimizing waste in association with the Government’s Waste Resources Action Programme.

The Co-operative Group re-designed its packaging on one of its product saving 8.5 tonnes of card per annum. In 2007, it ran a successful campaign and saved 8 tonnes of plastic shrink-wrap a year. In order to reduce the impact of glass on the environment, it has switched to recyclable plastic bottles saving 270 tonnes of glass as well as reducing energy consumption through more efficient transport. To the Groups credit, it introduced the world’s lightest whisky bottle.

In 2007, the Group’s food transportation containers saved 2,835 tonnes of cardboard. It also introduced the first Fair Trade cotton carrier bag, and wherever possible ensures the re-use of old and discarded computer equipment by donating them to charities. In the same year, at its own recycling centre in Manchester, the group recycled approximately 40,000 tonnes of waste, mainly card and plastic, and 1,250 tonnes of waste. The centre has become socially responsible and has opened an educational facility in Manchester for young people to learn about sustainable living and understand recycling in action.
