Apple won a patent dispute against Motorola Mobility regarding a “slide-to-unlock” feature on smartphones in Germany yesterday (February 16th).
The judgement marks Apple’s first patent victory over Motorola in any part of the world; in fact the company was forced to withdraw its iPad and iPhones in its German online stores recently as a result of a lost court ruling.
Patent consultant Florian Mueller said the ruling could affect patent disputes involving Android device manufacturers worldwide.
A spokeswoman for Motorola suggested the firm doesn’t expect the ruling to have a large bearing on future sales.
“Today’s ruling in the patent litigation brought by Apple in Munich, Germany, concerns a software feature related to phone unlocking in select Motorola devices sold in Germany,” she continued.
Motorola Mobility is currently in the process of being acquired by Google and most of its handsets run on Android. The EC recently ratified the acquisition of the company.
