O2 came under fire this week after a software expert revealed that many of the firm’s customers were having their mobile phone numbers made available to third parties – and potentially to cybercriminals – thanks to a web design flaw on the company’s site.

However, O2 claims it has addressed the issue, which it claims only affected users for a short, two-week period.

The leak was plugged on Wednesday afternoon and in a blog post, O2 said that it adds peoples’ mobile phone numbers to the other trusted information it shares with third parties. Normally this is secure and only available to those partners but a glitch ensured the numbers reached a wider, unintended audience.

Apologising, the phone network operator said: “In between January 10th and 14:00 GMT [on] Wednesday January 25th, in addition to the usual trusted partners, there has been the potential for disclosure of customers’ mobile phone numbers to further website owners.”
