A trial of 4G mobile phone connectivity technology in Cornwall will be extended until June of this year.

Everything Everywhere and BT Wholesale have both been given permission by communications regulator Ofcom to keep the trial running.

The 4G test began in October last year and has included 180 individuals in St Newlyn East.

Speaking to Mobile News about 4G and its potential to change the way the world communicates, Olaf Swantee, chief executive officer of Everything Everywhere, said: “The rollout of 4G will help drive economic growth and create jobs across the UK.”

He added that the trial “has been key in investigating ways to rapidly bring 4G LTE to Britain”.

Ofcom has come under fire for the problems associated with its 4G spectrum allocation, which has been held up by legal action.

The regulator was criticised because demand for 4G LTE is already high and is expected to grow by 500 per cent in the next five years.
