The poorly performing UK economy hampered mobile phone sales over the Christmas holidays, according to leading mobile retailer Carphone Warehouse.

The firm said that sales of its pre-pay handsets had dropped by as much as 40 per cent.

However, it seems that people are still recycling their mobile phone handsets in order to upgrade to the latest smartphones – such as the iPhone 4S and the Samsung Galaxy SII.

Commenting on the ever-changing mobile handset market, Roger Taylor, Carphone Warehouse’s chief executive officer, hinted that the retailer would reduce the size of its high street shops, saying: “You do not need a 30,000 square feet box to sell what I think is going to be interesting in consumer electronics retailing going forward.”
