London mayor Boris Johnson has recently commented that recycling and reusing are two “common sense” practices that should be adopted by more people.

Speaking as some £12 million in funding is set to be approved by the London Waste and Recycling Board for a new green energy facility, the mayor noted that people need to take “practical action” to cut down on their waste.

A further £5 million is expected to be invested in the Recycle for London initiative over the next three years to cut down on the waste sent to landfill by the capital ahead of the 2012 Olympics.

“We must also encourage Londoners to recycle as much as possible or reuse items that could just get chucked away,” he said.

The Recycle for London campaign estimates that up to 15 million old or unused mobiles are currently lying around in British homes and workplaces.

It notes that as these gadgets contain toxic components, it is important to ensure they are disposed of safely through recycling.
